Plates

The dinner plate is the anchor of the setting. It should be centered about an inch from the edge of the table.

Utensils Forks are placed to the left of the plate, with the salad fork on the outer left. Knives and spoons go on the right, with the blade of the knife facing the plate.

Glassware Water Glasses are placed slightly above and to the right of the dinner plate, while wine glasses are arranged to the right and slightly above the water glass. The white wine glass is positioned slightly higher than the red wine glass.

Napkin Placement A neatly folded napkin can be placed either to the left of the forks or creatively positioned on the dinner plate. Napkin rings are an elegant touch.

Extras A small plate with a butter knife can be placed above the forks if serving bread and a salad plate and soup bowl can be placed on top of the dinner plate for multi-course meals.
